I hesitate to claim the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, because the parts of Cluster are still pretty great on their own. It’s not a matter of two average elements coming together to make something good, it’s more about two great elements blending into something exceptional and beguiling. However, listening to the solo works of Roedelius and Moebius should clear up any lingering questions you may have concerning the role of each member within Cluster. The pretty melodies and ambient textures tend to come from Roedelius. The squelchy sounds and rhythms usually come from Moebius. Having said that, “Hasenheide” contains more overt melody than usual from Moebius and could easily be a Cluster track.
Here’s one from my salad days in the early 00’s western mass psych scene. Astral Blessing will be reuniting this summer to play the Festival of Endless Gratitude, our first full-band show since Nashville 2003??? (which wound up on the Mad Monk lp).
